HISTORIC VICTORY!

BAHRAIN'S Fahad Sulaiman raced to a historic victory to claim the title in the Gulf Energy World Junior Endurance Championship yesterday at the Endurance Village in Sakhir. The 14-year-old Bahraini beat some of the best riders in the world to win this prestigious event though the Kingdom had to be content with a fourth place finish in the team category.

Australia won the team title while France were the runners-up and Brazil finished third.

The victory was double sweet as it coincided with the celebrations to mark Bahrain's National Day and His Majesty King Hamad's accession to the throne. Fahad steered seven-year-old horse Lormar Lorrien to emerge champion among 140 riders representing 30 countries in this world class 120-km event which was divided into five stages. Lormar Lorrien, owned by Bahrain Royal Equestrian and Endurance Federation's (Breef) endurance committee chairman Shaikh Faisal bin Rashid Al Khalifa, put up an outstanding performance and had the best average speed in all stages.

Fahad was 30 seconds ahead of the UAE's Shaikh Abdulla bin Faisal Al Qasimi and his compatriot Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, son of Dubai Crown
Prince and UAE Defence Force minister, who came third in 5:53:51.
