Horse owners given opportunity to voice Hendra virus concerns

Biosecurity Queensland and Biosecurity New South Wales have developed a Hendra virus survey aimed at understanding the practices of horse owners. Queensland Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr Rick Symons said the ‘Horse Owner Survey on Hendra Virus’ is aimed at providing an insight into the practices, attitudes and opinions of horse owners.

“The survey focuses on understanding husbandry practices, general management of horses, and feeding practices which may be related to Hendra virus transmission. “Information on the location, layout, design and vegetation of properties will help provide an insight into possible interactions between flying foxes and horses.”

Dr Symons said the survey would also focus on the attitudes, opinions and horse owners’ understanding of Hendra virus.
“We want to know how people access information provided by state governments and what we can do to be more effective in communicating to horse owners,” he said.
“It is unknown whether horse owners have a good understanding of Hendra virus and we want to gauge if there is an information gap based on demographic features.”

Dr Symons said information obtained from the survey would be of value to those working in human health planning, and will help improve responses to any similar threats in the future.
“Our aim is to use this information to allow Biosecurity and other government agencies to tailor resources to reduce the risk of future Hendra virus incidents,” he said.

The survey can be completed online at: https://www.research.net/s/Horse_Owner_Survey_on_Hendra_virus
Horse owners can also access the survey via the Biosecurity Queensland website at www.biosecurity.qld.gov.au or the Biosecurity New South Wales website at www.dpi.nsw.gov.au

The survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete and is open to horse owners in Queensland and New South Wales.
The survey closes on 28 February 2012.

MEDIA RELEASE
Monday, 28 November 2011
Expansion of The Qld Horse Industry Alliance (QHIA) To Benefit the Equestrian Community of Queensland.
The Queensland Horse Industry Alliance was formed in May 2009 under a memorandum of understanding of Queensland’s peak Performance Horse Organisations which each represent the interests of the Queensland equestrian community across a diverse range of sporting and breed organisations.
Following the success of the QHIA Inc. as a formal voice on behalf of the equestrian industry on state and federal issues, particularly in light of viral and disease outbreaks and the subsequent government recognition, a number of additional horse industry organisations have requested to become involved, asking for the QHIA Inc. to also represent their needs.
As such, the QHIA Inc., previously QPHIA (Qld ‘Performance’ Horse Industry Alliance) now incorporates an industry alliance which represents breed societies as well as the performance horse sector, creating comprehensive coverage of the Queensland equine communities. Organisations working together within the QHIA Inc. now include Equestrian Queensland, Pony Club Association of Queensland, Polocrosse Association of Queensland, Queensland Endurance Riders Association, South Queensland Management Council of The Australian Stock Horse Society, Riding for the Disabled Association of Queensland, The Australian Professional Rodeo Association, Arabian Horse Association of Queensland, and the Australian Campdrafting Association.
With the mantel as the peak Performance Horse Industry Body, the QHIA Inc. will continue to work as a group with other equine industry organisations such as Thoroughbred breeders, racehorse owners, Racing Queensland and Harness Racing Queensland to work collectively in representing the entire horse industry throughout Queensland.
QHIA Inc. looks forward to continuing its representation to engage all Industry organisations in positive and constructive communication with a view of uniting the Queensland horse Industry. The Queensland horse industry is unique in its diversity and although our organisations may use their horses for different disciplines, we have many commonalities. QHIA Inc. invites all Horse Organisations to join the Alliance and share in the future of the Queensland Horse Industry.

What is Endurance Riding?

Take a look at the following video for a sneak peak at what endurance is all about then for more information check out our link Starting Out

Endurance competition tests the horse and riders ability to ride long distances within a maximum amount of time, and to remain sound and 'fit to continue' at the completion of the the kilometers travelled.

There are many ride distances offered to riders ranging from 5km kiddie rides to 400km marathon rides.

INTRODUCTORY RIDES (Usually around 20kms in distance)
Intro rides are non competitive rides for both horses and riders that provide an introduction to the sport of endurance over a distance of less than 40km. This ride distance is generally suitable for just about any horse and rider, high levels of fitness are not required and any horse from the age of 3yrs is welcome to participate. Riders and horses do not need to be a financial member of any association, so this is a great ride distance to choose if you are wanting to come and see what happens at an endurance ride and enjoy some time riding your horse along marked trails. The general speeds that 20km riders travel is a steady trot, and walk. To protect the welfare of your horse your total completion speed will be restricted to 14km/hr or less.

TRAINING RIDES (Usually around 40kms in distance)
Training rides are non competitive rides for both horse and rider that provide endurance training over a distance of less than 80km in a day.To enter a 40km ride both horse and rider will need a medium level of fitness, with training happening over some longer distances of 20-30km at home. Your horse will need to be no less than 4.5yrs of age to enter a 40km event. Training riders generally ride mixed speeds of steady trot, walk and the occassional canter as your total completion speed will be restricted to 14km/hr or less. Riders and horses are not required to be a financial member of any association to enter a training ride.

MINI MARATHON RIDES (Usually 3 days x 40kms)
Mini marathons are non competitive rides conducted as a single event where less than 80kms are ridden each day for 3 or more consecutive days. You must successfully complete the distance each day of riding to successfully complete the ride. Mini marathons are a great way to leg your horse up if you are wanting to compete in longer rides. Your horse will require a medium level of fitness to successfully complete a mini marathon and must be no less than 5yrs of age to enter. Riders must be a financial member of a Division to enter a mini-marathon.

These ride distances are the starting place for the aspiring endurance rider, or the casual social rider. To be able to enter in longer ride distances you will need to become a financial member of your state endurance association (QLD Endurance Riders Association for riders in QLD) and your horse will require a logbook (also available from your state association) Before being able to enter in a longer event you will be required to successfully complete 2 x training ride events. Your speeds will continue to be restricted to 14km/hr or less until you successfully complete 240kms of endurance rides between 80-120kms in length.

ENDURANCE RIDES (Usually between 80-160km in length)
Endurance rides are run over distances of 80kms or more, where there are awards and points presented to successful riders in each riding division. Placings are awarded in order of completion. Horses must be no less than 5 years of age to be entered in an endurance event, and 6yrs of age for a 160km event. During endurance events you will see riders riding for completion only and whom are not concerned about their placing, and you will see riders riding competitively for a place, with some rides seeing gallop finishes. The endurance motto is 'to complete is to win' and as such all rider types are supported. Completion speeds and the required horse fitness will vary depending on the rider type and age of horse.

MARATHON RIDES (Usually 3 days x 80km)
Marathons are competitive rides run as a single event where 80kms or more are ridden on a single day for 3 or more consecutive days. Your horse will need to be no less than 5yrs of age to enter.

ELEVATOR RIDES (Usually 80km elevated to either 100km or 120km)
Elevator rides are competitive events where the rider must successfully complete 80km before they can elect to elevate up to 100kms or more. You can choose to retire at the 80km and still be recognised for the distance you have travelled. Your horse must be no less than 5 years of age to enter, and 6 years of age for a 160km ride.
